Christian greetings, and welcome to the web page of The Elim Christian Centre, Glossop, Derbyshire, U.K. I write this the day following the closure of the Rio Olympic Games, a two week period of great excitement, and much by way of late night viewing! Here in the U.K., we are celebrating the remarkable efforts of Team G.B., second in the medal table to America, and having won more gold medals than China! Watching the events on T.V., I could not help but notice the number of times that the above phrase or similar words were expressed either by commentators or competitors following some outstanding performances. It was impossible not to get swept along with the exploits of so many in Team G.B. We watched with pride as they stood victorious on the medal rostrum and as the national anthem was being played. Their efforts have indeed brought great joy to our nation following a Summer of political and economic uncertainty.

The term ‘Who would have believed it’ was a phrase often used in the New Testament gospels as the writers sought to convey the wonder and amazement expressed by people as they listened to and observed Jesus Christ fulfil His ministry whilst He was here on earth. Many non-religious people place great value on the teaching of Jesus as He gave what has become known as ‘The Sermon on the Mount’. Jesus expressed radical and life changing values as He taught the principles that lie at the heart of the Christian gospel. At the end of His teaching, there were those in the crowd who were heard to express something along these lines:-

There were times when people stood in total amazement as they witnessed Jesus perform His mighty miracles in opening blind eyes, unstopping deaf ears, and even calming the raging waves on the Sea of Galilee. ‘Who would have believed it’ was  so very often the response of people as they observed Jesus demonstrating such power.

For the Christian believer, Jesus continues to demonstrate such power in and through the mission of His Church as it seeks to reach out to people through the power of The Holy Spirit. People today continue to marvel at the transformation Jesus brings into the lives of so many people. ‘Who would have believed it’ is a phrase that can still be heard as people observe the life of Christ being outworked in and through His Church globally.
